Thalidomide - vivisection is far too cruel and inhumane -however some other animal testing has proven effective, e.g.
penicillin kills guinea pigs -it is known that some drugs tested on animals have created bad effects on humans e.g. For some it depends on whether the pain of the animal should be considered- Bentham, Mill and Utilitarian Peter Singer all said it should 3) the Hedonic Calculus would then be applied to calculate the pleasure vs pain- if it creates the biggest gap between pleasure and pain it is morally right Examples: -testing cures for cancer on animals is arguably not right (Animal Aid) as is repetitive and pointless, animals also do not have the same constitutions as humans, e.g. 1) an act utilitarian would not take into account previous cases of experimentation as each case is unique and judged differently 2) they would apply the Principle of Utility to the case, if the animal experimentation would or would not produce the biggest gap between pleasure and pain.
